A message to teachers who refuse to pronounce the names of their students of color correctly.
In a new video, Adam Levine-Peres, an educator in the Bronx, talks about the importance of teachers, especially white teachers, learning how to pronounce the names of Black and Brown students properly. He says pronouncing the students’ names correctly “will go along way in the classroom”, otherwise there might be lack of trust, students might end up giving up on things like their teacher gave up on saying their name the right way.
Just going to also add in SPELL THEIR NAMES RIGHT, TOO.
Like, my school has an Indian student who is super awesome. None of our teachers took the time to fucking look up how to spell his name and messed it up repeatedly. If you’re not sure how to spell a name (and goddamnit, I know how that feels all the time because I’m dyslexic as fuck, so I warn my kids to just blast me when I spell their name wrong because I go out of my way to make sure they’re all correct), just open your fucking gradebook or roster or wherever you have official info and CHECK THE SPELLING.
And, because I had this issue with our secretary at the beginning of last year since she kept spelling one of our Chinese student’s names wrong on everything (lists, her school email, her gradebook profile, EVERYTHING), make sure that the official records are CORRECT and take the info down to your office to make sure they’re correct when they aren’t. Don’t make your students (or their families) waste time on mundane shit you could’ve caught early on. Don’t make them fight to have their name right on official documents should they move or need them for applications or whatever.
